Raymond M. Harbeson, Sr.

Age 83, of Dover, DE, formerly of Wilmington, DE passed away surrounded by his loving family at Kent General Hospital Bay Health Center on Wednesday, February 28, 2007.

He was born in Wilmington, DE to Gilbert, Sr. and Helena (Conly) Harbeson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gilbert Harbeson, Jr.

He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1941 and attended Temple University.

He served in World War II as a US Army Ranger under General George Patton. He landed on Normandy beaches 24 hours before "D-day". He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Hearts and the Croix De Guerre, as well as many other citations.

He retired from the Diamond State Telephone Company after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. In his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed worldwide travel and wintering in Cape Coral, FL.

As a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, he served as an Elder, Youth Group Leader, Men's Prayer Lunch Leader, and on other numerous committees.

He was a longtime member of Granite-Corinthian Masonic Lodge #34. He also served as a Scout Master of Brooklyn Terrace Boy Scout Troop #58, where he was responsible for numerous Boy Scout activities, including camping at Camp Rodney.

Raymond served diligently God, Country and his fellowman. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Elizabeth (Davison) Harbeson and his 4 children, Raymond M. Harbeson, Jr. and wife, Ellen, of Dover, Barbara Draper and husband, William, Sr., of Wilmington, John G. Harbeson and wife, Mary, of Dover, and Ronald L. Harbeson, of Newark.

He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, R. Mark Harbeson, Robert Harbeson and Eric Harbeson, William Draper, Jr., Elizabeth Bielicki and Robert Draper, Rebecca Cronk and J. Matthew Harbeson, and Jonathan Harbeson. Also surviving are 4 great-grandchildren, Tristan, Sarah, David and Scott, all of whom he was very proud.

Funeral services will be held at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 501 S. Maryland Avenue, Wilmington at 1 pm, on Monday, March 5.

The Masonic service will be held 15 minutes before the memorial service. Burial will be held following the memorial service at Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to Calvary Presbyterian Church, 501 S. Maryland Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19804; or the Boy Scouts of America, 801 N. Washington Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
